Our Founder, Rebecca Beardsley, sat down with Jack and Carolyn, radio hosts for The Morning Breeze on 98.1, to discuss Haircuts with Heart, the extensive efforts of each volunteer member, and our part in giving back to those in need locally.
Walking along College Avenue in Oakland, we see 77 Salon Inc., a small salon with stylish displays of haircare products, and a chic vibe. Our volunteer Jenifer welcomed us in the lobby filled with warm lighting and the delicate fragrance of shampoos.
“Would you like a style today?” I asked her. She shook her head, “No, I have to go.” She left in a hurry. And so, the afternoon went like that. Several times she would come to the doorway, pop her head in, but not step through the threshold, almost as if there was something in the room that she could no participate in.
Our last event of 2018 was a great success! The Stephen and Ayesha Curry Family Foundation and Kaiser sponsored a Pop Up Care Village with our partner Lava Mae Oakland where we provided 69 services to 29 people.
In celebration of #GivingTuesday we gave 35 people the gift of haircutting/barber services at the Salvation Army Garden Center, a family shelter in Oakland. Volunteer stylists brought their big hearts and skills to bring smiles to children, women and men living in shelters.
Many supporters of Haircuts with Heart have asked, “How is the work going?” “What is happening on the streets?” “What are your experiences?” Our intention is to use this space to share updates on our work in the community, volunteer efforts, and partnerships, and interact with our supporters.
